Gower College Swansea Catering student Shane Davies has competed in the grand final of the Game to Eat Student Chef of the Year competition.
Students from across the UK were invited to enter this new competition which is held in association with the Craft Guild of Chefs.
Shane, accompanied by lecturer Stephen Williams, travelled to the final at London’s Ealing College on Wednesday 6th March where he served up partridge two ways.
A student on the CGLI Level 2 Diploma in Professional Cookery course at Tycoch, Shane first heard about the competition during his classes and decided to give it go. With the help of Stephen Williams and Ioan Lodwig, he entered the competition and made it all the way to the final, which was judged by Mark Hix.
The competition was open to Year 2 and 3 catering students who had to submit an original recipe using partridge or pheasant. The prize fund included £500 of equipment vouchers along with a week’s work experience at a top restaurant.
Alexia Robinson of Game-to-Eat says: “The Game-to-Eat campaign was set up to encourage more people to eat game, either at home or when in a restaurant. We feel this competition will give chefs of the future a good introduction to cooking game and the flavours that work well together. As a wild, free-range seasonal meat it is a must-have for all restaurant menus.”
Ambitious Shane is also getting ready to participate in the Camp America programme for nine weeks over the summer, working as a chef at Indian Head Camp for Children in Pennsylvania.
