Gower College Swansea students will get their ‘comfy’ shoes out on Friday 8 March when they undertake a sponsored walk for Care International.

The Independent Living Skills students will depart from the Tycoch campus at 1pm and head towards Singleton Park.

The walk is to mark International Women’s Day and Care International’s ‘Walk in Her Shoes’ campaign.

‘Walk in Her Shoes’ aims to raise awareness of the daily struggle of women and girls in developing countries who are disproportionately affected by poverty and who have to spend hours walking in search of food, water and firewood for their families.

“We are hoping that staff and students will walk up to five miles on the day,” says the college’s Equality and Diversity Officer Jane John. “All monies raised will be donated to Care International, which works to fight global poverty. We had brilliant sunshine on last year’s walk so we are keeping our fingers – and toes – crossed for this year.”

In addition to the walk, the college will commemorate International Women’s Day by holding session swaps where students from a range of areas including beauty, digital technology, plumbing, sport, health and social care and childcare, trade places.
