A Gower College Swansea student has become the first learner in Wales to be awarded a VTCT Certificate of Excellence.

Kirsten Howell recently completed a Level 3 Beauty Therapy Treatments course at the Broadway Centre before progressing onto the Level 5 HND Diploma in Hair and Beauty Management.

“I was really excited to be awarded this certificate but to find out I’m the first student in Wales to receive it was just amazing,” says Kirsten.

The Certificate of Excellence is only awarded to outstanding learners who demonstrate exceptional quality 'above and beyond' what is expected. The key areas focus on outstanding technical skills, teamwork, customer service, sales and aftercare.

VTCT is the specialist awarding organisation for the hairdressing and beauty sector.

“The Certificate of Excellence has very strict criteria and requires the applicant to have gained 100% attendance on their study programme, coupled with outstanding progress and achievement of all practical and theory areas,” adds Learning Area Manager Bernie Wilkes. “We are all delighted for Kirsten that her hard work and dedication has paid off - she is an excellent student.”

Kirsten is planning a career in beauty management, with a particular interest in dermatology, after college.
