A team of 16 to 24 year olds from the Broadway Centre of Gower College Swansea have created their own hair and beauty on a budget workshop after being awarded a £500 grant from Lloyds Banking Group’s Money for Life Challenge.
‘Hair Makers, Beauty Savers’ visited Dylan Thomas Community School on 27th of January, using the workshop as a creative way for the students to share their money management skills.
The team hopes that the workshop will impress judges of the Money for Life Challenge, a national competition that provides a fun way for students in further education, work-based learning and community learning sectors to develop money management skills and pass them on to their communities. The team is hoping that the workshop will help them reach the UK Grand Final in London on 15 May 2014, where they could win £2,500 for the registered charity of their choice.
Keiron Burgess, team leader, said: ‘’The team really enjoyed delivering the workshop at Dylan Thomas Community School. We believe we were able to give an insight to the pupils on how to manage their money when it comes to hair and beauty. Media today put pressure on the young people to conform to a certain image, this then leads to spending on the latest trends and getting into debt. We presented our fun and interactive demonstrations and advice on how hair and beauty can be affordable”.
Lucy Turtle, Project Sponsor of the Money for Life Challenge team from Gower College Swansea, said: “Taking part in this project has enabled the students to gain new enterprise and employability skills in project management, teamwork, innovation and financial capability. The ‘Hair Makers, Beauty Savers’ teams has worked extremely hard planning this workshop and we hope we have a good chance of making it through to the Wales final in April.”
